What is a digitigrade and how is it related to IT?

digitigrade [ dij-i-ti-greyd | \ ˈdi-jə-tə-grād \ ] adjective

walking on its toes, as is the case with most quadruped land mammals.

Advantages of digitigrade locomotion (leg movement):

  • More efficient movement
  • Better support and stability
  • Faster and quicker
  • Quieter and more graceful

A little history…

Sometime around 2003-2004, I was bestowed the domain dogtoe.com which I quickly embraced as my own personal domain name.

Without knowing it’s original purpose or creator’s original intention, I was largely elated to own a relatively short, and relatively simple domain name. After nearly 20 years, I’m happy to say that this domain is still alive and kickin’.

And now for some insight…

classDiagram
    class dogtoe {
        my domain
    }
    class dog {
        English
        [noun] a domesticated carnivorous mammal
    }
    class toe {
        English
            [noun] human: any of the five digits at the end of the foot
            [noun] animal: any of the digits of the foot of a quadruped
    }
    dogtoe --> dog
    dogtoe --> toe

A dog’s toe is just one example of digitigrade locomotion in land mammals (specifically those with four legs).

Extrapolating the advantages of a digitigrade, we can apply these same concepts to become an IT posture.

Similarly, the idiom “tiptoe around” can be applied to our technique of tackling new challenges or operating inside of an existing (production?) environment.

That’s a bit of a stretch…

More to come…
